Hanson Conservation Commission approves East Washington Street garage variance

HANSON — June 4, 2025 — Hanson Conservation Commission approves garage variance and advances open space plan letter at June 4 meeting. The three-member quorum — Chair A. Mansfield, Lana Blake, and Frank Skellinger — voted unanimously to grant Peter S. Kelly Jr. of 364 East Washington Street a variance to work within the 50-foot wetland buffer zone and issued a negative three determination approving construction of a 24-by-32-foot detached garage, conditioned on installation of a silt sock along the rear work area; the existing structure had been demolished in November after roughly 80 years on the property. The board also voted unanimously to sign a letter of support for the town's updated Open Space and Recreation Plan, a document state officials require before granting plan approval, and issued a long-delayed certificate of compliance for a septic installation at 143 Union Park Street completed approximately 20 years prior. An informal staff assessment of a proposed pond access route was placed on the record with the conclusion that wetland crossings of 200 to 300 feet would require pile-driven structures estimated well above $100,000, rendering the idea fiscally and environmentally non-viable.
