Hanson Board of Health Approves Well Permit, Flags Transfer Station Bid Complication

HANSON — October 14, 2025 — Hanson Board of Health flags battery hazard, budget shortfall, and hundreds of unregistered apartments. The board, meeting October 14, learned that its $1,500 hazardous waste day budget line was fully spent after a single shared event with East Bridgewater, Abington, and Whitman, leaving the board to draw from a $9,733.08 Recycling Dividend Program grant account for two remaining regional events in October and November. Health Agent Phil reported that improperly stored lithium batteries — some wet and corroded, left near oil storage at the transfer station — were stabilized with a temporary kitty-litter container, with a permanent storage solution still pending. The board also learned that a transfer station contract bid opening held the prior Thursday is on hold while town counsel reviews whether a missing signature on a prevailing wage form disqualifies one bidder, with the interim town administrator and outgoing Town Administrator Lisa both having said only the non-collusion and tax collection forms are mandatory. Acting Chairman Pete Butler said the board plans to seek restoration of the hazardous waste budget line at the next town meeting, noting the library successfully reclaimed cut funding — and gained an extra $10,000 from a resident — using the same approach. A new barbecue restaurant, Fetch Barbecue, is moving into 1282 Main Street, the former Ellie's Kitchen space, and the board voted unanimously to approve a well permit for 274 Whitman Street conditioned on receipt of an as-built plan.
