Hanson Board of Health Approves Three Septic Plans, Tables Pig Permit

HANSON — April 15, 2025 — Hanson Board of Health approves three septic repair plans and tables a pig permit over zoning concerns. The board, chaired by Kevin Perkins with member Arlene Dias, voted unanimously Tuesday to accept plans for 419 Spring Street, 387 Woodbine Avenue, and 2 Main Street, each carrying multiple local upgrade approvals including groundwater separation reductions and Confirmation of Infiltration Volume analyses in lieu of perc tests. A pig permit application for a South Street property was tabled pending a formal opinion from the town's zoning enforcement officer; Hanson's bylaws prohibit piggeries in Residential A and DA districts, and the 2.3-acre parcel likely falls short of the five-acre minimum for agricultural classification. Contractor Steve McFarland of Whim River Environmental argued that adding a $200 component fee to routine riser and filter installations — pushing a $120 effluent-filter job to $325 — is deterring residents from routine maintenance; the board will take up a possible separate, lower fee tier at its rescheduled May 20 meeting.
